The Indians called them, Pahayokee, "Grassy Waters" they are also called, "The River of Grass" Florida's Everglades National Park is 1.5 million acres of subtropical wilderness and wildlife habitat. The American Crocodile calls them home as well as many non native species such as the python. Big Cypress National Preserve is the Everglades northern neighbor and consists of over 700,000 acres of freshwater swamp. The endangered Florida Panther lives here in a community of diverse plant and animal life. The Everglades and Cypress Swamp of today are small shadows of their past selves. The virgin Cypress trees have been cut, the water has been nearly cut off and as is all too often the case - mankinds madness to tame every inch of the planet has vastly altered an ecosystem that is still only now being understood.
