Description
John Jacob Mingus, (1774-1852) moved to the Oconaluftee area in 1790's making him one of the first Europeans to settle in the area. John Mingus, son of John Jacob, had the mill constructed in 1886 at a cost of $600.00. Water was used to turn a steel turbine which in turn ground wheat into flour and corn into meal. The mill operated commercially until 1934 when the National Park Service purchased the land, including the mill for inclusion in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park service operates the mill as a historical exhibit during the summer months.
