Description
Rainbow Falls in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an 80 foot vertical drop waterfall. On sunny days the sunlight hitting the mist of the falls creates beautiful rainbows. Located just outside Gatlinburg, Tennessee the Rainbow Falls Trail is off the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. The hike to reach Rainbow Falls is 5.4 miles from the parking area and just four miles below the summit of Mount Le Conte. The hike to the falls passes through old growth forests and thick rhododendron thickets. Black Bear encounters along the trail are common. Some very large Eastern Hemlock trees grow along this route and the Park Service has worked diligently to save these trees from the invasive Hemlock Wholly Adelgid that has kills millions of hemlocks in eastern forests.
